Cape May County is Critically Important to Birds

Each year, millions of birds migrate through Cape May County. Every bit of green vegetation is crucial for their survival. If the vegetation is native, it will provide proper food and cover for these hungry and exhausted migrants who travel thousands of miles between breeding and wintering grounds.

Too Much Lawn

If birds and other wildlife only have lawn to count on, they do not thrive and, as we have seen over the last 50 years, animal populations decline. It is estimated that there are over 40 million acres of lawn in the U.S. Much of that is treated with pesticides and herbicides, killing the very insects birds need to eat. Lawns have no habitat value and many could easily be transformed into garden oases.

Habitat is Declining Rapidly

Do you feel like you constantly hear chainsaws buzzing in your neighborhood? The reduction of trees in Cape May County in recent years has been startling. Oak trees are known to benefit over 900 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, which birds rely on for food, especially during migration. We cannot count on others to ensure we have safe havens for wildlife into the future and homeowners have an opportunity to make needed change.

You Can Make a Change!

When I bought my house, this yard needed help! It had very few native plants and was not the haven I wanted for migratory birds. I set out to completely re-imagine the lot to attract bugs, bees, birds and other wildlife.

Work WITH Nature

After just a few years, I transformed my yard to a wildlife paradise full of native plants, shrubs and trees. I get dozens of species of birds and pollinating insects not only during the spring and fall migration times, but throughout the year. My designs provide food, cover and water desperately needed by wildlife.
